Overview:
There are two common causes of piston jam errors. This article will aid in the troubleshooting and resolution of piston jam errors.
Potential Cause(s):
- Bin obstructions
- Failing parts
- Input tray bin(s) over filled (please refer to Troubleshooting Guide: Remove the Input Tray and Check Cards in the Bin X Errors (Classic))
Bin Obstructions:
The most common cause of a piston jam error is when a card is laying across the top of a sorting bin due to static or a card misplaced error. The gantry camera does not see the card covering the bin and then the piston attempts to extend but cannot due to the card covering the bin. Due to the piston shaft not being able to extend at least halfway, a piston jam error is triggered.
How to Resolve:
- Remove the card or obstruction that is covering the bin. Once the card or obstruction is removed, you can resume the sort by clicking "Ok" on the error message on the GUI.
- If the issue persists, contact Customer Support.
Faulty Parts:
A piston jam error can happen if one of the following parts are starting to fail.
- Piston
- Pneumatics bracket
- Disconnected pneumatics hoses
Piston:
If the piston shaft is excessively dirty, the piston can stick. This is identified by long dark streaks on the piston shaft. This can also be felt when manually extending the piston as there will be resistance.
How to Resolve:
- Replace piston
- Perform a test sort to ensure the issue is resolved
- If the issue persists, contact Customer Support
Pneumatics Bracket:
There are two ways the pneumatics bracket can cause a piston jam error.
- Pneumatics line(s) are not installed correctly
- Failing pneumatics bracket
If the pneumatics bracket airlines are not installed correctly, this causes a loss of air pressure and prevents the piston from extending.
How to Resolve:
- Manually check all pneumatic connection to ensure they are secure (including the piston)
- If a loose connection is found, secure the connection(s)
- Perform a test sort to ensure the issue is resolved
- If the issue persists, contact Customer Support
Pneumatics Bracket (cont.):
When the pneumatics bracket is starting to fail, the piston will not extend, will partially extend or extend very slowly due to low air pressure.
How to Resolve:
- Replace pneumatics bracket
- Perform a test sort to ensure the issue is resolved
- If the issue persists, contact Customer Support
